Surprisingly only minutes from Taunton Town Centre, Aginhills Farmhouse, nestles in the landscape and surrounding fields, offering its guests the seclusion of a rural retreat.

Access is by a short drive on the private road alongside the Taunton to Bridgwater Canal and a leafy lane where much interesting wildlife flourishes. The canal  is a much enjoyed leisure facility for locals who enjoy the opportunity to walk, cycle or jog along  its towpath. Often there are fishermen hunkered down over their rods and others who just enjoy watching the resident family of swans or feeding the many ducks.

Surrounded by green fields where you may see rabbits, foxes, squirrels and perhaps deer and badgers, the farmhouse also has its own large, pleasant gardens with an ornamental fish pond and an attractive, original, walled vegetable and fruit garden.  We are lucky to be visited by many interesting bird species who feast upon the fruits and seeds in the abandoned orchard to the rear of the house.  In time this will also be restored to its former glory – we have already planted a number of new fruit trees.

Despite its seemingly rural location, within easy walking distance are local Inns at Monkton Heathfield, Bathpool and Hankridge Farm Retail Park.  Restaurants featuring traditional English, Chinese, Italian, Pizza, and  Indian cuisine, together with well-known international takeaways and more traditional English fish and chips are just a pleasant stroll along the canal and River Tone or, a short drive into Taunton gives access to a further extensive choice of cuisines.  The nearby Hankridge Farm retail park offers multi-screen cinema, ten pin bowling, a large supermarket with pharmacy, restaurant etc. and other major retail outlets.  The full facilities of Taunton Town Centre are easily accessed along the canal towpath on foot or bike, or a short drive by car or bus.

Taunton,  county town of Somerset, offers sporting venues where you can watch rugby (within walking distance), County cricket, horse racing, and football. For those who wish to participate in sport during their stay, there are sports clubs within walking distance and a number of leisure centres in the town and golf courses within a short drive.

The acclaimed West Somerset Railway has frequent steam train events and is just a few miles to the west of Taunton at Bishops Lydeard. You can hear the hoot of the engines as they travel to these events from your room at Aginhills Farmhouse!

The wider area offers fishing, walking, horse riding, cycling, bird watching, nature reserves, garden centres, a range of historic houses and gardens (both National Trust and privately owned), spectacular scenery - inland and along the coast, and good shopping at  major retailers - including Clark's Village Outlet Centre, just a 30 minute drive away.  The legends associated with Glastonbury and the Vale of Avalon give visitors to the area much to investigate amongst the special scenery of the Somerset Levels, the rugged landscape of Exmoor and its association with Lorna Doone, and easy travel connections both up and down the region to access Devon, Cornwall, Dorset with its Jurassic Coast and the conurbations of Exeter, Plymouth, Bristol and Bath.
